I was meant to give a 2-minute presentation about my book, The War on Women in Israel, at this week's Jewish Book Council "Meet the Authors" conference. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my trip to NY. Instead, the JBC asked me to create a video, which ...

And Shelly Makes Two: The Forward Op-Ed

Elana Sztokman
Tuesday, 11 October 2011
A Jewish Feminist Column
With the election of Shelly Yachimovich to head Israel’s Labor Party, two major political parties are led by women for the first time in the country’s history. This is an encouraging development not only because it helps advance gender fairness in Israeli society, but also because it potentially signals a new era for Israeli politics, one that has implications for issues as wide-ranging as the military, the peace process, the role of the Haredim and the movement for social justice.

My Son, the Babysitter?

Elana Sztokman
Monday, 05 April 2010
JewFem Blog: Men, boys and masculinities
There are moments when I feel bad for boys. Like every time my son tries to get a babysitting job. The scene is almost always the same. A parent — almost always a mother — calls up to ask my oldest daughter to babysit. My daughter, in age-appropriate behavior for a 17-year old, will often say that she is busy, but that she has a younger brother who may be available. “But does he know how to babysit?” usually comes the reply. Other times there is an awkward silence, when the offending mother realizes she is about to be obnoxious — sexist really — and tries to make other excuses. Lately, questions about the availability of my son’s younger sister have increased in frequency. She is 12½ , by the way, and is now in high demand, with at least one weekly job. My son, by contrast, has had about two babysitting jobs in the past six months. (Not to worry, he is in high demand as a dog-walker, so he still has money to go to the movies with his friends.)

Hard lessons I learned from four years of doing media opposite Trump supporters

Elana Sztokman
Tuesday, 26 January 2021
JewFem Blog: Social Activism

Over the past four years, I have been in an unenviable position of regularly debating Trump representatives on air. As Vice Chair for Media for Democrats Abroad in Israel, I was the go-to person for the Israeli media looking for a voice to counter their Trump-supporting regulars. Amid the predominantly pro-Trump Israeli media, my team and I were ra...

Merav Michaeli for Prime Minister

Elana Sztokman
Sunday, 24 January 2021
JewFem Blog: Social Activism

I'm very excited about what is happening today, right this second, in the Labor Party. Although I had to cancel my Labor Party membership last January when we formed the Women's Party, if I WERE still a member of Labor, i would be EAGERLY and EXCITEDLY voting for Merav Michaeli right now... The prospect of Merav Michaeli winning as head of the part...

Inauguration: I'm breathing again

Elana Sztokman

biden-harris
Like so many other people, I cried during the inauguration of Biden and Harris. It was about the humanity, the diversity, the joy, the compassion, the commitment to serving the people, the listening. All of that. And more.  The music, the cultures, the celebration of what can be. I daresay hope. But let's face it. There was a much bigger ...

What happened to the women erased in the biblical genealogy?

Following up on my previous post, this is the essay I wrote after my first one was rejected. They published it, only after deleting several sections about Miriam's life and about gender in Jewish life. It was incredible to me. In an essay about the many ways women's lives are erased, they erased women's lives. I'm publishing this here in full ...

What if Moses were a woman? Here's what would happen

Elana Sztokman
Friday, 22 January 2021
JewFem Blog: Social Activism
The following post on the Torah portion was solicited by a Jewish newspaper that then refused to publish it on the grounds that, "Your essay needs to be about the parsha." The post was exactly my thoughts after reading the first section of Parshat Va'era, and cites those sections. The reason it wasn't "about the parsha" in my understanding is that...

If you think Trump is a friend of the Jews, you are a 'freier'

Elana Sztokman
Friday, 16 October 2020
JewFem Blog: Social Activism
Below is the text of the op-ed that i wrote in today's JPost -- but here it includes all the useful links for those interested in my sources. The latest argument put forth by Trump supporters on these pages – he is a repugnant but you should vote for him anyway because he is good for the Jews – is head-spinning in its obscenity. This argument,...

It's 3:11 AM and I can't sleep. I have too much to do, and too many thoughts floating through my head.  I have been serving as Vice Chair for Media and Policy for Democrats Abroad Israel since the 2016 elections. But it's mostly been on a low flame. Now, however, as the election is less than 100 days away, an election that may in fact be ...

Will there be Orthodox women rabbis in Israel?

Elana Sztokman
Sunday, 12 July 2020
JewFem Blog: Social Activism
The headlines heralded what many of us have been agitating for years: Orthodox women are going to be recognized as rabbis in Israel. All over social media, Orthodox women virtually cheered, as did their allies. But that excitement after last week's decision by Israel's attorney general, Avichai Mandelblit, to require the rabbinate to accept women's...
